Amyloid proteins and catalytic amyloids

Amyloids have been long perceived as a proverbial protein “trash” - biological
constituents in which misfolded proteins “go to die”. In recent exciting discoveries we
made, it has been shown that naturally-occurring protein amyloids – human disease-
associated and physiological amyloids, and functional bacterial amyloids catalyse
key pathological, metabolic, and biochemical reactions. This phenomenon may point
to new functions for protein amyloids, which we aim to uncover.
